Water Saving System.

As we need to wash the salt water off our boats we have decided to save mains water by collecting the rain. With the addition of two metre-cube water butts we have decided to harvest the rainwater from the large roof to the East of the race tower. Tom and I thought about and designed a simple system that removed all of the down pipes that took water under the clubhouse and drained onto the promenade and connected all the guttering to run into the water butts which now live on top of the Fuel store.

A simple but effective couple of extra pipes connect the two butts together and the excess over flow is fed back into the drain.

The system had to be tweaked to make the continuous line of the gutters run downhill to the east end of the building and now after a few days of rain both containers are full.

A simple test on Saturday showed that the system works as long as the end of the pipe has a nozzle on the end, as the 3 metre height difference and nozzle gives enough pressure to wash boats.

Further work will be completed to join the two containers together and give a hard connection that goes down to the existing system.

As you can see Tom was integral to the work and helping reduce the water used by the club.
