And Further ahead We host the OK boats for their eastern championships on 9/10th August. This is a competitive class on the water and like to celebrate off the water. These open events allow us to showcase the club and support the club finances. Please sign up for Volunteering duties. Our very own Dave Bourne will be competing to uphold club honours. |
With increased Cadet/Adult sessions occurring it is worth remembering our safeguarding rules. These are designed to keep us all safe. | Safeguarding |

Learning as a sailing community Thanks to all the new and experienced volunteers so far this year. Great to see sailing events happening, with many members on the water. If you want to learn more skills like safety boat, race officer and kitchen duties please do talk to me and Peter Falcini we will try and help. Just a reminder, we are able to do what we do, at the current price because we all do volunteering. Please do get involved, thank you. Other learnings from this past month are: The slipway has been scraped now but does require a jet wash when the hose has been repairs, which is in hand. Volunteers to help jet wash the slipway would be welcome - reach out if you are able to help to Brian or Karl Royer Always keep an eye out to sea, on a Thursday evening the mermads noticed a boat out to sea apparently adrift, having notified the coastguard they launched Viking to investigate. They found 2 people in a small rib fishing! But you can never be too careful. |
During the July we will be sailing two races in memory of former members, For newer members here's some background to why we remember them. |
The Colin Sproxton Memorial Trophy is dedicated to the memory of Colin, a lifelong Mirror sailor and one of Herne Bay Sailing Club's most committed and respected members. A trained electronic engineerbelieved to have worked for MarconiColin contributed countless hours to the club, maintaining its radio equipment and supporting the running of races. Long before formal RYA training was introduced, he took it upon himself to teach and inspire young sailors, generously sharing his knowledge and passion. Colin's competitive streak wasn't limited to the waterhe was also a keen rally driver, regularly entering events including the Monte Carlo Rally, in 1959. That spirit of competition stayed with him throughout his life. Tragically, he passed away doing what he loved mostracing his beloved Mirror dinghy. During a Wednesday evening Lone Mirror race, Colin crossed the finish line in first place, tacked, and sadly passed away onboard. This trophy honours his legacy, both as a skilled sailor and a true club man. | The Jim Newberry Memorial Trophy commemorates another exceptional member of Herne Bay Sailing Club. Jim Newberry was a lifelong sailor, a past Commodore, and a passionate Mirror enthusiast who mentored many of the club's young sailors. During the Second World War, Jim served as an RAF officer flying reconnaissance missions over Europe as a photographer aboard Lancaster bombers. His wartime service is reflected in the unique trophya compass from a Lancaster aircraft. Jim continued sailing into his late 80s, always encouraging younger members with kindness, wisdom, and unwavering enthusiasm. A highly capable sailor and dedicated volunteer, Jim's legacy lives on through this trophy, celebrating the values of mentorship, service, and community spirit. |

Committee Decision Made. We have taken the decision to rationalise the club fleet to Optimist/Optibats; Toppers, RS Vision, 2000 and Feva's. The Quba's and Terra's will be sold. We are on the lookout for an affordable 2000 to supplement the training fleet. Once confirmed with Canterbury Golf Club we will be selling tickets for the annual Dinner Dance and prize giving on the 14 November. The event includes a local band, Nightwatch, and is priced at £40. Darren Moor is leading the production of some marketing material to promote the club The General Committee started considering what the subscriptions and fee structures should look like for next year, to be presented at the AGM on 14 September 2025. Like our own costs, these have risen by over 30% over the last few years and subscriptions have risen a significantly slower rate. |
