Splash April 2026
Coming out of Hibernation.
After winter hibernation we are seeing the start of the sailing season. During the winter Guy Alexander coordinated a large programme of works to the club. We had as many as 40 members doing maintenance around the clubhouse.
Sailing Opportunities
As a club the general committee and sailing committee are keen to offer opportunities for all to enjoy their sailing. Having listened to feedback we have four offerings, these are:
Cadets: focused on youth sailing and typically on Saturday afternoons. This is supported by cadet parents and offers training opportunities.
Open Sailing: Whilst this has no coaching it is an opportunity to get on the water and practice skills under the watchful eye of a safety boat. These sessions typically occur on Saturday mornings with some early afternoon sessions
Improvers: This is similar to Open Sailing but with either an experienced sailor or instructor in attendance. It's an opportunity to learn new skills and receive feedback and support in developing current skills
Racing: This is an opportunity to race around marks. The racing scene is friendly and a great opportunity to judge how your sailing is progressing in sailing around courses.
Events
At the time of writing we have 4 days of racing, training course on 18 and 25th for level 1 and level 2; and improvers on 11 April. Cadets start their season on 9 May with an opening splash at Westbere.
For those interested in developing skills on the safety boat there is a course on 2 May run by Allan McNeill, Laurie Dengate and Tony Herlihy. The course is designed to take the basic powerboat level 2 skills and develop skills to aid sailors in boat recovery, whether capsized or under tow. This course is important for those that want to support sailors whether they be cadets, improvers or racers.
We will be offering more course throughout the year to support sailing and powerboat skills. For more information on courses and to sign up email training@hernebaysailingclub.co.uk
Membership Renewals
To benefit from all the club has to offer make sure your membership is up to date and paid for. If you are having difficulty in signing up for your renewal please reach out to our membership secretary, Justin Tuck on membership@hernebaysailingclub.co.uk.
General Committee
I'm pleased to mention Graham Harbord has agreed to fill the role of Vice Commodore. This is an important role in supporting me and the rest of the general committee. Your general committee has continued to work during the winter to ensure that we have a sailing club that meets the needs of all members. At our most recent meeting we discussed plans on how we ensure we meet the needs of all members and how we promote the club. I'm interested in hearing from all parts of the club on how we continue to develop our club. Feel free to catch me when I'm at the club or email your ideas to commodore@hernebaysailingclub.co.uk
Bar and Galley
The bar and galley continue to be a valued part of the club offering. Soon we will be asking members to indicate in advance whether they proposing to attend sailing so we can tailor the food offering to the numbers attending. We want to expand hot and cold food offerings whilst minimising waste. The prices in both the bar and galley have been held for the coming year, despite increases in costs. The surplus we make in the bar and galley make an important contribution to our overall finances.
