HBSC Bulletin - edition 3

Welcome to edition 3 of the Bulletin - the regular communication keeping you updated about all aspects of club life, for all club members. The aim is that there is something for everyone and to encourage participation and involvement. We hope that you will find it informative and interesting.

Maintenance

So much has been done this winter and it looks great thank you to all who helped.

Slipway laying is on Saturday 11th March, 7am start. Please, please we need helpers in order to get this down before the tide beats us! Please bring gloves, and a decent pair of sturdy shoe/boots, old clothes. Eye protection is optional. Please sign up on SCM. We have 8 volunteers so far thank you but we do need more.

Race tower update: The race tower is being completely refurbished. A wonderful new addition is that Colin Comper has designed and built a lighting system for running the races. This will make race management so much easier (and fun).

Socials

40 adults and 2 children enjoyed a home-cooked Sunday lunch at the club on 19th Feb, and the event raised £250 for club funds, not including bar profits. Thanks to the team who cooked and served the meal - Jane, Jeni, Pauline, Steve, Simon and Dave, and the members who stepped forward to do the washing up!

There was even time for some pebble art

Contact Tatiana by text to book your place at the curry night 07506020537. Pay on the night with cash or card: £6 for curry, £2 for cheesecake dessert. Both home made - yum.

On Saturday 18th March, Bill Phillips is going to give a talk on 'The Mystery of the pudding pans'.

Since, at least, Tudor times, anglers from the North Kent Coast have been finding red earthenware pots in their nets. These have come to be known as Pudding Pans and, in addition to be found in the Whitstable, Herne Bay, Ashmolean and British Museums have spread around the world. There have been many theories, (some as fanciful as Kent's own Atlantis) as to who made them, where they came from and how they got there. The talk will explore their fascinating detective story and look at the fate of these pots and current thinking and possible future research initiatives. Please come along, friends and family are welcome, and some money to spend in the bar.

Charity Events

Olaf is in the midst of his rowing challenge to support Karl's campaign: http://bikeride.bigmight.com/blog/ . You can track Olaf's progress here: http://bikeride.bigmight.com/olaf_progress.html

Role Vacancies

Thank you and welcome to Fiona to volunteering to be Club Secretary.

We are still looking for someone who can take on Club promotion to expand the communications team. We are really fortunate to have a small team of members who produce flyers etc given the input and post to our website and Facebook pages. To make it even better, we would love someone to come forward who would like to help design flyers and posters and liaise with organizations and businesses in the community, including the press. Any contribution will be welcome irrespective of how long you have been a member.

Sailing

The new sailing season is amazingly fast approaching starting with the Opening Splash on Sunday 12th March. We hope to see you on the water!

Please sign up on SCM to fill duty slots. Slots still available for the galley on 12th March, and safety boat crew on Sunday 19th March.

Gear and boat parking

The gear left in the gear store and upper boat store is now being removed as due notice has been served.

There are two lasers that need moving so the council can sweep the shingle off the prom. We may have to shift them onto the bank if they are not moved but they will not be secured. So please help us with this, see picture below to assist with identification:

Please 'like' our Facebook page 'Herne Bay Sailing Club' and follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/herne_bay_sailing_club/

There is also an informal WhatsApp group for any member to join, this is for your pleasure only and is not regulated by the committee, nor a formal communication channel, contact Olaf to join: 07859189607

And finally

Who fancies this?

Keel boat sailing at Queen Mary Sailing club: Corporate Keelboat Days » Queen Mary Sailing Club.

Full day is £80: morning of training, lunch, and afternoon of racing (0930-1630)

The interest window is still open; please let Clare Dunning know via this form https://forms.gle/XL6b5rX5fWd7btMN8 and we can see if we have enough to go as a group, on a date that suits everyone. A few members have done this in the past and had a brilliant day. No sailing experience is required, it's a great opportunity to try something new whether you are new to keel boat sailing or dinghy sailing.
